DrinkS & sNacks – Sicilian hospitality

Aperitivo is common in Sicily, you meet friends or customers for drinks any day of the week. Nice habit in Sicily is when you order drinks they always bring snacks. It can be chips and peanuts, or many times even a small tray with finger food like mini sandwich, meat balls, vegetables ecc. These are for free. If you want more food you can order drink with aperitivo or Happy Hour menu, and for some extra euros you get a larger tray with more different foods, enough for dinner. Enjoy!

Here we are at bar Daquiri at Corso Umberto in Taormina. You find it on the main street with funny colorful big flower vases on the steps.

Aperitivo ?r vanligt p? Sicilien, du tr?ffar v?nner eller kunder ?ver drinkar vilken dag som helst i veckan. Trevlig vana p? Njut!

The garden made for Lady Florence Trevelyan

Do not miss the botanic garden in central Taormina, also called Villa Comunale. The garden was originally the home of Lady Florence Trevelyan, English noblewoman and cousin of Queen Victoria. She lived in Taormina since 1884 and married the mayor, Salvatore Cacciola. The park was created according to Lady Florence’s wishes as a typical English garden in which many rare plant species were planted. The rumour says she was not happy living in Taormina, so she got her own garden and things went better. She died in 1907.

Entrance is free, open from 9am to sunset. Take witha book, coffee and croissant. Here you get a relaxing moment from busy Taormina.

Hon dog 1907.

Entr?n ?r fri, ?ppen fr?n 9:00 till solnedg?ngen. Ta med en bok, kaffe och croissant. H?r f?r du en avkopplande stund fr?n v?lbes?kta Taormina.

When a child is born

The Sicilian tradition when a child is born, is to mark the front door with a decoration that tells the whole city and village that the house has a new born baby. If the decoration is pink, then a girl is born. If the decoration is blue, a boy is born.

Sicilian way to eat

The sicilian cuisine is quite simple to make because you feel the taste of each ingredient. You will notice that here in Sicily they do not use much spices. A great restaurant is one that is capable to combine the first and second course in the same pan, like this one where we ordered grilled prawns and with the apetizers leftovers they made a lovely tagliatelle called Diavola by adding fresh chilli and fresh pasta. With a light red wine this was a perfect dinner. Personally I like the Cucina Povera as they call it here, translated The Poor Kitchen, easy dishes made of what the soil and sea brings; contains much fish, beans and vegetables, wine and olive oil. It is also the famous Healthy Mediterranean Diet.

Birthdays and Private boats – Taormina bays and hills

Instead of a classical birthday invitation at a restaurant it was this time organized as a private boat tour, and may I say that if you have not seen Taormina bays from the sea side, you have still things to see here. It is one of the most beautiful places to rent a boat or yacht to spend your time by the sea. Amazing relaxing time for festivities.

We were out just before sunset to enjoy the amazing sicilian sun go down slowly behind the Etna volcano, crystal clear sea and reflexions towards Taormina, Isola Bella and Giardini Naxos. Organizer was of course Sicily Private Spot. Take with you your favourite champagne and camera. I let the pictures speak for themselves!

Emilio Pucci Bikini Bar World Tour at Timeo Taormina

Emilio Pucci has a Bikini Bar World Tour to promote his summer beach wear 2017 and yesterday the tour landed in Taormina at the Grand Hotel Timeo with an amazing unique view. It is one of the most impressive hotels in the world as Richard Gere said last years film festival in Taormina that he has never been in such place before. This tour goes from Tokyo to Beirut to Cannes and so on. Got an invitation from my favourite store in Taormina, Taormina Mood, at Corso Umberto which I recommend to visit if you are here as he buys in very special items from designers, here you do not find the classical line of fashion, just unique items. The blog writer in blue long dress. Visit Timeo if you are here, a classical breakfast at the terrace is a must; cappuccino and cornetto.

Bloggf?rfattaren i bl? l?ng kl?nning.

Taormina a military zone for G7

22nd to 28th May Taormina is closed for visitors and only residents and workers with a pass can get in. Everything is been carefully searched before they let you in with a pass and by the metal detectors by Porta Messina and Porta Catania the queues are very long. All his for the G7 meeting to be held 26th and 27th May, this weekend. The road entrances to Taormina looks like the border from Palestina in to Israel (yes, I have seen them myself). G7 is highly excessive.

I has been stressful times for us working here in the tourism sector as the information has been close to zero from authoroties and so many rumours has been circuling like “they will close the highway” and “internet and telephones will be closed down!”, which are silly rumours but typical for Sicily to create more mess than necessary. Roads has been closed an opened with not much pre warning so much has had to be solved in last minute to understand how to get e.g. guests to the hotels. It is not the works or events like G7 and Giro Italia, that passed here a week ago, that disturbes, it is just the bad organisation and lack of information. It is quite fascinating to see how adult men in leadership positions do not manage to do more than create more mess of a mess and the mayor crying in the media that he is the most hated man. Well, you are not respected that for sure as an german five year old could have done the work much better. So please take in outside competence the next time you even think of organizing a big event here again.

Some words has wispered in the ear that the company that got millions in euro to renovate all the streets in Taormina is Renzis friend who just opened a VAT number this year to be able to get the contracts. Well, I can believe that is true as it is the Italian Style. Atleast we have new nice roads, roads signs, renovated bridges that got damaged from last years tropical rains, new walls…until the first rains comes as they have also managed to cover the drainings. Who live will see! And then Black Bloc will demostrate in Giardini Naxos this weekend and you probably remember how their demostration went in northern Italy 10 years ago with coma and death. Nobody understands how a mayor can allow them … but that’s how it is when the money talks.

For women who love men in uniforms it will be in total of two weeks of drooling and vet dreams as only 9,000 military soldiers has arrived and even more cops. Champagne cork to be fired towards the sea when all this is over 28th afternoon! Ciao from Taormina!

Ciao fr?n Taormina!
