Out in the Sicilian Citrus fields

When I am out in the fields it is like paradise. You breath fresh air, look at all the hard work people do by hand and you are where we should be…in the nature. I feel free. This is one of my favourite part of my work, but also the most difficult. Regulary I visit all fields where fruits and vegetables grow to update with changes and varieties, all this then sent to buyers in Europe. With the producer we collect all information. For citrus it takes about three days and for vegetables approximately a week, from morning to evening, including writing the summary to buyers. Welcome to a small tour in the organic citrus fields; lemons, grapes and oranges.

The agricultural revolution in Sicily – Back to ancient grains

Translated from the article ?versatt fr?n artiklen

The revolution of Sicilian peasants, 3,000 hectares of ancient grains against multinationals. The return of biodiversity in agriculture, partly from the local wheat. To improve the environment, nutrition and health.

Ancient grains are back in Sicily. They return to reconstruct landscapes and enrich the biodiversity of agriculture which for decades was reduced to a few species selected to a super wheat island that was one of the granaries of the Roman Empire. Officially now is only 500 hectares, but there are those who speak of 3,000. The farmers who are switching to organic and the recovery of local seeds grow from year to year, they are associated, they set up food chains and create culture, instead of just agriculture.

“I converted 100 hectares of the family land to the local grain” says Joseph Li Rosi, one of the strongest supporters of the return to the past in agriculture, “and I am the guardian of three local varieties, Timilia, Mallorca and Strazzavisazz”. The sow keepers of botanical rarities, devoting at least 10 hectares in each culture, engage in historical research and to maintain the purity of the seed. Li Rosi, farmers for generations, is also a president of the Simenza association which brings together seventy producers “but another hundred are ready to go,” assures Joseph. The idea is, in addition to conservation, is cultivated fields made of a mixture of seeds, a diametrically opposite process to the modern technique, which seeks uniformity, the standard in favor of quantity.

Free Animals

This is a very common sight in Sicily. Animals walk free in the nature and have a lot of space. Perhaps the agricultural structures are more simple than Nordic structures, but the terrible reputation that most animals are badly treated here is not the whole truth.

Detta ?r en mycket vanlig syn p? Sicilien.

Tarocco

This orange variety is called Tarocco and is my favorite orange of them all. It is a red orange in Sicily, but seen as a white orange in Europe. It has the perfect combination between the white and red orange.

Sicilian Solo Farmers

We visited a sicilian solo farmer 450m asl where he grows vegetables with no pesticides or electricity, and he has also built a natural water supply for the produce. These veggies are supernatural.
In Sicily it is perfectly ok to stop by these producers and ask if you can buy something. They harvest it for you right there and then. The taste is amazing and the KG price is very low.

Sicily Once Upon a Time

Most part of the Sicily has no forest. You find some forest on Etna and on the north side of Etna. But most of the land is bare land with some vegetation with low trees and bushes. Sicily has not always had this landscape. A long time ago Sicily was filled with forests, but all trees was cut down as conquerors always used the fertile island for agricultural produce lika Saffron, Wheat, Wine and much more. Then also for sulfur. Sicily has many sulfur mines, but those a closed today.

Shit for Luck!

To step in animal poo is considered as luck in Sicily. It has its origins from agricultural traditions where a field filled with shit was a very rich soil and the farmer was very lucky. The more shit, the better soil. And this gave also richer harvests because poo was and still is used as fertilizer in sicilian agriculture.
