In Italy you are allowed to bring your dog to IKEA. IKEA in Catania has also their own “stray dogs” watching the warehouse. And they are allowed to take a nap inside in the exhibition area by the entrance. Normally they eat and sleep just outside the entrance. No one gets upset, people are just fascinated about this. These dogs live here and are taken care of.

Catania, and Sicily in general, is very dog friendly. Only place that is a little problematic is long way buses, but in general dogs are welcome everywhere. We have no problems to bring Jack London into stores, restaurants, hotels ecc. In Catania the municipality has also made couple of dog parks with fences where dogs can play freely. These images are from the central park called Gioeni and was recently made even bigger. There is another park in Vulcania. Here you have access to water for the dogs and trash bins. There are rules of course that you have to demonstrate the health card for your dog and female dogs in heat are not allowed to be brought. A police officer is also present in the whole park.
We are travelling to Scandinavia soon and have to prepare much more in advance for Jack London because it is more strict with domestic animals.

In Catania I have met many wonderful people rescuing abandoned dogs. E.g. in the park most dogs are adopted dogs or dogs people have found on the street. There are four dogs that were in such bad condition that the new owner has spent lots of money on Vet care and surgery to save the dog. There are some people who only take in abandoned dogs. We went to the Vet some weeks ago to check Jack London’s health and just that day in the queue were three streets dogs with fresh new owners waiting for their turn to get a total health checkup. Now lately we have also found associations where you can adopt dogs and our next dogs will be adopted. Feel a little bit stupid buying a dog after I found all these associations where you can find really nice dogs to adopt. Of course there are idiotic people here that abandon their dogs because they do not understand that a dog takes time and effort, but here are so many amazing people just doing the opposite….rescuing these dogs and takes them to their homes.

Last weekend a Dog Day was organized in Catania. Here your dog could meet other dogs, participate in competitions, you could adopt dogs and also buy different products for dogs. Jack Londons best friend Billy participated in two categories: all dogs and breed. Of course Billy won both of them. He is the black and white Border Collie in the last photos.
The association who organized the event was very good and so typical sicilian. They are very aware of the animal protection issues here and also that people starts to wake up. Here in Sicily they speak clearly, in a way you can not speak in Scandinavia, but I like the sicilian way much better. They said out loud that we people do harm againt animals and we are to blame if e.g. our dog is aggressive. Animals are a joy to people and has to be treated well. People who treat animals badly does not deserve to live on earth. It is time to wake up people! Now! And remember that dog fights are organized by the mafia and if you bring your dog there and bet your money there, you are worse than mafia! Mamma mia, speaking like this in Scandiavia. LOL! It was a great event and more events are planned. Next time also Jack London will participate.

This is a very common sight in Sicily. Animals walk free in the nature and have a lot of space. Perhaps the agricultural structures are more simple than Nordic structures, but the terrible reputation that most animals are badly treated here is not the whole truth.

Detta ?r en mycket vanlig syn p? Sicilien.
To step in animal poo is considered as luck in Sicily. It has its origins from agricultural traditions where a field filled with shit was a very rich soil and the farmer was very lucky. The more shit, the better soil. And this gave also richer harvests because poo was and still is used as fertilizer in sicilian agriculture.
