Skiing on Etna – with Eruption!

Skiing on Etna is something out of this world! And especially when the volcano in erupting the same time. This day was just perfect! New fresh snow that didn’t become icy yet and no wind at all. So warm I had to take my gloves off and was glad I just put jeans on. On one side you have the volcano, and on the other side a spectacular view to Taormina, Giardini-Naxos and with a clear day like this, all the way to Calabria.

Sadly you can not program to ski on Etna as the window of days is very narrow. We had just one day in one week of time to go because as soon as the Sicilian hot sun appears the snow melts rapidly and Etna is often very windy. You can do this if you are lucky to be in Sicily this time and match a day similar to this.

The north side has snow some days longer than the south side. There are two bars, some rental offices for ski equipment ecc. Three lifts with short slopes as Sicily is of course not a ski destination. We paid 30 euro each for the lifts, 20 euro each for rental of a whole set and 3 euro for parking. There is also a nice lunch restaurant by the slopes which you can reach skiing and then just take the ski lift up again. I recommend to go in the middle of the week as weekends are very crowded. — More photos after Swedish text —

Skid?kning p? Etna ?r n?got utanf?r denna v?rld!

Etna and Earthquake

The world was reached by the news from Sicily that we have had an earthquake here yesterday early morning. The strongest was magnitude 5.1 earthquake located southeast of Acitrezza, north of Catania. We have no reported deaths, 10 people injured, but much damages on houses and roads. Badly effected towns are Zafferana Etnea, Santa Venerina, and small mountain villages around. Many people’s houses has collapsed or got badly damaged, but mostly old houses that are not built according to newer construction standards that requires attention to earthquakes.

The highway Catania – Messina is closed down from Catania to Giarre for inspections (direction north). If you visit Sicily you may notice that most parts of the highway is built on bridges, not on the soil. They have build the highways this way due to the areas high risk for earthquakes, then the bridges blocks move during the quake instead of the road getting cracks or dangerous holes.

The airports longest closure was four hours, then four flights an hour could land. The problem for the flights is the lava dust and stone particles that can damage the motors. It is very common the airport closes when Etna also has smaller eruptions as all depends on in which direction the wind goes, and this time it was towards Catania. The flights are then redirected to Palermo and Comiso. Etna has eruptions couple of times a year. This eruption was strong as all three top craters were active and new craters holes was developed on the volcano, but we were also lucky that the lava ran down to the large volcano valley, Valle del Bove.

We are used to small earthquakes as 1.5 – 3.0 is quite normal activity several times a year, and we know we are living in an active area in many ways. When Etna is erupting it sounds like there is a war going on, powerful bangs like bombs falling. The lava does not move fast, just couple of kilometers an hour. The problem is often the earthquakes and stone rain. The lava show is though spectacular.

We’ve had over a thousand quakes, the record was over 400 quakes in four hours (according to a local article I saw). After quakes are still going on, the strongest was 2.0. But as I wrote before we have often 2.0 quakes as it is an active area, Etna is an active volcano.

I live in the Taormina area and we did not get effected, but in Giardini-Naxos they felt some of the quake. Giardini-Naxos is just right below Taormina on the south side.

Building started year 1500 and was planned to be the largest monastry in Europe. The Monastry has been destroyed several times due to natural causes; lava eruption 1669 and Sicily’s worst earthquake 1693. The reconstruction started 1702 and many monks moved here. The reconstruction was following the original plan for the monastry and finally became the largest in Europe.

Helicopter – Smoking Craters -Etna – The View – The Must Do!

Helicopter tour around Etna and its top crater is one of the most exciting things I ever done in my life and a must do if you come to Sicily. It is worth every cent spent! First you fly from the north side of Etna towards the top crater, around the volcano and at the end almost above the crater so you can see inside it. The back the helicopter flies just above the freshest lava flows back to the station again.

I flew with Sicily Private Spot and they do not fly if the crater is covered by clouds, and you even get your money back if the weather is not good. Here is their website www.sicilyspot.com

H?r ?r deras hemsida www.sicilyspot.com

Visiting Lava flows on Etna at 2800 m a.s.l.

Yesterday I got the amazing opportunity to visit lava flows on the south side of Etna at 2800 m a.s.l. To be close to one of the natures most fascinating forces is an experience words can not cover. See the lava move like a river down hills and feel the heat in the middle of the snow is truly amazing. Here to witness wonders of the earth and understand how incredible small we are standing on one of the worlds most active volcanos.

We took the cable car to 2500m and then walked to 2800m. Arrived to the lava stream by 6pm, just before seeing the sunset towards south and see the red color of lava in the dark. The we had to walk back from 2800m to Rifugio Sapienza at 1900m. Tough tours, but really worth it. A memory for life. With these snow walls and weather conditions I felt like late spring home in Lapland.
