Messina – Norwegian aid dish, harbor & imaginary bridge

The highlight of Messina is the main church with a astronomical clock tower offering a clock show everyday at 12:00. 1908 the city was struck by an 7,1 earthquake and Norway sent two ships of cod as aid and Messina’s main dish Stocco alla Messinese was created. In the video I also visit the imaginary bridge area and best view sites.

Messina is a city with 236000 inhabitants where the the harbor connects Sicily with Calabria by mafia controlled ferry traffic. Will the bridge ever be built?

Memorial site for Giovanni Falcone, his wife and bodyguards

This is the memorial site for judge Giovanni Falcone in the Maxi Process against the Sicilian mafia, his wife Francesca Morvillo and his bodyguards; Vito Schifani, Rocco Dicillo and Antonio Montinaro.

Killed by the Corleone mafia 23rd of May 1992 when 500 kg of TNT exploded from under the highway right on this spot. Thanks to cigarett butts and change of Italian crime law allowing DNA tracing, the murderers could be found.

Corleone town & Mafia museum

Mafia, it is a sensitive topic, but belongs to the Sicilian history and actually also the present. Whatever one says is always wrong, but decided to visit Corleone and the Mafia museum to see and hold the original documents of the Maxi Trial in my hands.

Corleone is a small town south of Palermo with stunning scenery driving there. 600 m.a.s.l. with approximately 10000 inhabitants. Most Sicilian mafia bosses comes from Corleone and still have over 70 “men of honor” alive, whereof most of them are jailed. The town is still run by a mafia boss. It is one of the kindest places I have visited in Sicily because people work hard to show another side of this area.

Place that gives the shivers

Just outside Palermo you pass by one of the most horrific places historical wise in Sicily. The time when full blown mafia war between the clans and state was as at worst. But also the bravest when two people took the lead to fight these criminals, Falcone and Borsellino. Knowing they will pay for their work with their lives.

This monument by Capaci is the place where judge Falcone, his wife and body guards were killed by dynamite placed under the road 23rd of May 1992 by the Corleone mafia. Falcone worked to overthrow the power of the Sicilian Mafia building one of the most important legal cases in Italian history together with Bosellino, the Maxi Trial. The Maxi Trial was successful as 338 of 475 defendants were convicted, and 19 mafia bosses got life sentences including the most feared one Toto Riina, the Corleone boss.

This happening also lead to other legal changes. For the first time in Italy the privacy laws were changed and the guilty ones for this mass murder was found thanks to DNA in cigarettes left on the ground on significant spots for detonation. DNA connected to the Corleone clan members.

When you visit Sicily, avoid asking the locals about the Mafia and avoid being silly about the mafia. If you ave questions, ask a guide or us foreigners living here. It is a never healing wound here.

Do the Mafia still exist in Sicily? Most Sicilians says no, but yes, the Mafia exists. Not as brutal as those days, but it is a huge problem. Have I met the Mafia? Yes. You automatically do living here, but I as a foreigner do not have the same issues as a locals.

One example was my favorite restaurants by one of the offices I worked in. The owner was so kind and polite. We drank Prosecco and talked about life while waiting for my lunch to be ready. I borrowed him tools when they fixed things in their restaurant. I knew he had connections looking at all the allowances and licenses he got so easily from the municipality, while others had to work so hard to get anything done. He could create things a normal person never could. One day the restaurant was closed, the busiest month which was strange. I opened the newspaper and from many arrested faces I saw his face. Arrested for murder, extortion, drug- and weapon deals…the list was long. Do I have to be scared? No, I don’t have any business with them. Was just a neighbor ordering lunch. This is one side of Sicily!

The reason I don’t believe in Roberto Saviano – author of Gomorra

Roberto Saviano no one has missed as he is the author of the world famous Gomorrah book and TV-series based on his book. I have never believed in Saviano and the threats he claims he has from the Casalesi clans. I will explain why.

His book Gomorrah was published 2006, the era when the italian government was most successful against the mafia, ironically it was during the Berlusconi era. Berlusconi has been accused to have connections with the mafia, which never has been proved. After Berlusconi was put aside the mafia started to grow rapidly again. In recent years it has been revealed that the italian government is strongly linked to the mafia and has got its own name “Mafia e Capitale”, meaning “Mafia and the Capital”. Savianos work and success with the book came during the time mafia faced hard resistance from the government. Saviano needs police protection 24 hours due to this book he claims the mafia hates.?

Have you ever heard of Angelo Jannone?

Angelo Jannone was the commander of the police in Corleone, Sicily, 1989 to 1991. With Giovanni Falcone head investigator on the heritage of Tot? Riina and the accountant Pino Mandalari. Angelo managed to enter the Corleone clan and was then transferred for security reasons. He has been shot by sicilian mafia clans due to arrests and investigations and in Calabria he signed a bill which lead to the arrest of 187 mafia members from Cosa Nostra and local clans in Calabria. In Calabria there is the Ndrangheta clan, which is one of the most dangerous and powerful clans in the world. Jannone was transferred from Calabria after a informer releaved information a bomb was planned to kill Jannone.

Then he lead a three year investigation against italian IRS corruption and was again almost shot to death with a Kalasnikov by people he investigated. He was then transferred to Rome, left the police and was inserted in special investigation unit. During that time he managed to get infiltrated in criminal organisations in Italy and Colombian drug traffickers linked to Camorra clan allowing the seizure of 280 kilograms of cocaine and the arrest of over 43 people in Naples, Milan, Rome, Amsterdam and Venezuela. He drafted the first report on Economics, Crime and Finance in Italy.

I have met Angelo Jannone in Catania where he received one more honor award for peace work in the world. He travelled without bodyguards and police protection, recieveing the award in an open public place in Catania.

If a man like Angelo Jannone can travel and live in Italy with work positions in government and universities, do one really think a book writer like Roberto Saviano, that has not lead to any arrests or much disturbance at all, needs all this police protection? This is why I think Roberto Saviano is a media hoax. What he has created is just another fiction, but no true real work.

And the fires continues in Sicily

We have had many fires in Sicily this year, more than last year and the fires are lit by locals; Messina, Ragusa, Taormina, Giardini-Naxos, San Vito Lo Capo and so on. So why do the locals want to burn their own land? Yes, it has to do with some typical local thinking “If I start some fires, I get more money in my paycheck”. You look only in to your own home and income, and do not care about other people getting effected by damages, healt issues caused by smoke, putting other peoples lives in danger, damaged properties, ruined businesses, burnt animals and so on. It is the mafia way of thinking.

Active in the tourist industry we follow these fires and the problems closely to see if our guests will be effected and if they need to be evacuated, like this hotel complex in Letojanni / Taormina that is one of the largest on the island had to be evacuated last friday. Reason is the same, locals started a fire just under the hotel. When fire fighters needs to have their contracts renewed, it is the same story we start fires to show the government that our jobs are needed, the locally famous forestale issue.

The fires starts normally the days it is very windy, like last friday the temperatures started to drop from over +40 ?C close to +30 ?C and late morning this fire was started. The wind was very strong and the fire grew very fast.

Italy is the country with most fires by far in the whole Europe and almost all of them are started by humans. Sicilians do not like very much to talk about the issue and say it is just few people doing this, but almost 50 people has been arrested this far and majority of the perpretrators are never found. This does effect also the tourism industry as guests choses other european destinations for their vacation because of these fires. I was personally shocked to see peoples reaction of anger learning to know that foreign media has written about these issues. Wouldn’t one be more worried about all the people who gets effected of these fires?

Last year many parts of Cefalu had to be evacuated because of one of the largest fires in Sicily in a long time, also this started by locals. The area had an immediate drop of a tourist and many local business suffered economically, many went bancrupt.

Article about 15 fire fighters arrested in Ragusa because they have started fires: Firefighters in Sicily accused of starting blazes for cash. For more information please use Google.

Do not be afraid to book your vacation here, Italy has the best crises team in the world, hotels are well prepared and foreign tourist offices are used to handle these issues very well. We have not been effected by any of these fires thanks to good preparation and observation.

Vi har haft m?nga br?nder p? Sicilien i ?r, mer ?n f?rra ?ret och br?nderna startas av lokalbefolkningen; Messina, Ragusa, Taormina, Giardini-Naxos, San Vito Lo Capo och s? vidare. S? varf?r vill lokalbefolkningen br?nna deras egna land?

F?r mer information anv?nd Google.

Insurance – Perhaps most fraudulent system here

The italian insurance system is perhaps the most fraudulent system in this country. Every insurance is expensive because this is one of the sectors all parts try to get that extra dime. I always look for the cheapest option and only pay fro RCA, which means only the basics to cover damages for third part. You can get lucky with good insurances if you are all very good friend with the agent or who deals with issues.

My car got damaged by my neighbour last year. He tried to intimidate me with his temper and size that the accident was my fault. It clearly was his and I screamed back at him everywhere he raised his voice. The insurance company finally put the blame on him. With accidents you have to be very careful as you are not allowed to move the items before the police comes to document how the accident may have happened and it is their final that counts very much in the version to the insurance company. DO NEVER MOVE YOUR THINGS EVEN IF IT BLOCKS THE TRAFFIC! My neighbor moved his car. The police was very angry at his behaviour as he even tried to make me look like a fool infront of the police. There are very prejudices againts people from east Europe here and my neighbor did not know I was from Scandinavia. So when police took my documents they told the man “that this woman come from one of the best countries in the world. And look at our country and your behaviour. It is easy to knoe who to believe.” It is terrible this way they think, but this is the way it is here.

So then starts the insurance process. With all papers the company calls a controller and asks me to bring the car to a mechanic. Now it gets interesting. I calculated the damages to be maximum 500-600 euro. After ten days comes the controller from my insurance company and without my presence he and the mechanic calculates the damages to be 1200 euro. It was way too much. But in Italy it works often this way that perhaps the mechanic took 600 for work and 600 was given as black money to the controller from the insurance company. I was then sent a check of 1200 euro. I have to go to the postoffice to change it to money. Then go to the mechanic and give the cash for a receipt. This whole paperwork and get the car repaired took four weeks. It went faster than normal as I got also got a witness and many people back me up with their point of view. My neighbor had to move as so many were angry at him.

Never ever spend your money in advance. It is a very little chance you get them back. I recommend to just pay for the cheapest insurance and no extras. Please just take this as a recommendation, then of course you decide what to do.? It is also better to have insurances through your bank, as there you already have a personal connection.? Often you find the cheapest options online.

I got the recommendation to visit a doctor and ask the company for neck and back pains. Many do it here even if nothing happens. This way you can get your extra dime, 4000-7000 euro, for free. But then also the process takes much longer. I did not do it! Many thinks I am a fool.

Aldrig n?gons spendera egna pengar i f?rv?g.

Sicily – Season is officially open

In Sicily the tourist season starts to open up. Beaches gets cleaned, more traffic on the streets, facades gets painted, summer lidos opens…it is like living in a new place when winter turns to summer. Sicily is perhaps the safest area to travel to, I may say that even from Naples and below is very safe in Europe now. And we have the super famous organisation ironically to thank for. Where those guys are, there are also police present. But mafia has better knowledge of who is coming and going than the system itself and they protect their interest carefully. A summer top by Recanati beach is saying “Health And Dick”, so I guess the season if officially open.

Mafia and Anti-Mafia the same thing?

The ex-president of Sicily, Lombardo, got convicted to a jail sentence some time ago, and he is in jail. The reason is mafia affairs, economic frauds against the public administration. So, even if he got convicted of mafia affairs he is still getting 6000 ?/net monthly from the new Sicilian government that so hard and openly makes PR to be Anti-Mafia and fighting mafia. The president for Sicilia, Crocetta, has been in the EU anti-mafia organisation.
And they still pay 6000? to a convicted mafia man?
