Last night Taormina Film Festival

Sunday was last night for 66th edition of Taormina Film Festival. Limited audience of 900 people instead of 5000 due to Covid 19 restrictions. Last night was about awards and some winners had to receive them live streamed due to travel bans. Stunning scenery as usual. It was a rainy weekend, but fortunately Sunday afternoon and evening it stopped raining and the event could be held outdoors. Sad about Taormina events is that there are no services. Seats were not dried and nothing to sit on, you have to bring everything yourself and beautiful gowns gets dirty due to mud and dirty rain water. You are not allowed to bring water with you inside and you can not buy any either. So three four hours with nothing to drink in the middle of the summer.

Syracuse – the beauty of Piazza Duomo

One of the most beautiful baroque piazzas in Italy is Piazza Duomo in Ortigia, Syracuse. A rectangular piazza surrounded by flamboyant palaces.? Here you find the extraordinary main church and the church of Santa Lucia, which is important for us Swedes.

The main church of Ortigia has not much left from the Greek era than couple of Doric columns in the facade, but is worth a visit. It’s dedicated to Athena and is part of the UNESCO heritage list. Usually when you seen one baroque church, you have seen them all, but this main church is very different. Its style is mainly Baroque and Rococo on the outside, inside has parts dating back to the Siceliot epoch, and parts dating back to medieval times, built by the Normans and thus left until the present day. Its internal structure is composed of several naves and chapels, which have a classic and decorated style, typical of the Baroque too. The site of the church dates back as far as year 700 B.C, but the church was complete 1753.

By the main church is the Chiesa di Santa Lucia alla Badia, an important church for us Swedes as we celebrate Saint Lucia the same time as in Sicily. Here you find the original masterpiece from Caravaggio, Il seppellimento di Santa Lucia (Burial of St Lucy). It’s painted in Syracuse between 1608 and 1609.

Sicilien. H?r hittar du det ursprungliga m?sterverket fr?n Caravaggio, Il seppellimento di Santa Lucia (Begravningen av Santa Lucia). Den m?lades i Sirakusa mellan 1608 och 1609.

Quattro Canti

Quattro Canti in Palermo is also known as Piazza Vigliena, built between 1608-1620 in Baroque style. The piazza has four sidea, a form of a octagonal with four streets crossing. The four facades are identical and has fountains and statues of the four seasons, four Spanish kings of Sicily and four patronesses of Palermo.

Welcome to Sicily Wine & Dine

Two days ago we opened a Sicilian Wine and Gourmet shop. The right time came this year to create a nice shop with limited and genuine Sicilian produce. It is called Sicily Wine & Dine and it follows the same philosophy as other work I do; transparent, limited production and healthy produce.

The website will grow, we are very late due to many issues to create this in Sicily, but we decided to open and take it from here.

Sicily Wine & Dine is for you who appreciate authentic, non-industrialized products, limited production, organic and for you with the passion for quality wines and gourmet foods.

Food brings people together, wine makes people talk. ? Sicily Wine & Dine

Don’t miss Cave Ox

If you are out by Etna north side and enjoying wine yards, do not miss Cave Ox. An amazing local restaurant in Solicchiata, just where the wine districts starts by Etna. The cook by the seasons and the owner is very friendly. He also offered me to taste some new wines he was thinking to have in the wine selection. Here having their anti-pasti and then Porcini mushroom pasta.

The reason I don’t believe in Roberto Saviano – author of Gomorra

Roberto Saviano no one has missed as he is the author of the world famous Gomorrah book and TV-series based on his book. I have never believed in Saviano and the threats he claims he has from the Casalesi clans. I will explain why.

His book Gomorrah was published 2006, the era when the italian government was most successful against the mafia, ironically it was during the Berlusconi era. Berlusconi has been accused to have connections with the mafia, which never has been proved. After Berlusconi was put aside the mafia started to grow rapidly again. In recent years it has been revealed that the italian government is strongly linked to the mafia and has got its own name “Mafia e Capitale”, meaning “Mafia and the Capital”. Savianos work and success with the book came during the time mafia faced hard resistance from the government. Saviano needs police protection 24 hours due to this book he claims the mafia hates.?

Have you ever heard of Angelo Jannone?

Angelo Jannone was the commander of the police in Corleone, Sicily, 1989 to 1991. With Giovanni Falcone head investigator on the heritage of Tot? Riina and the accountant Pino Mandalari. Angelo managed to enter the Corleone clan and was then transferred for security reasons. He has been shot by sicilian mafia clans due to arrests and investigations and in Calabria he signed a bill which lead to the arrest of 187 mafia members from Cosa Nostra and local clans in Calabria. In Calabria there is the Ndrangheta clan, which is one of the most dangerous and powerful clans in the world. Jannone was transferred from Calabria after a informer releaved information a bomb was planned to kill Jannone.

Then he lead a three year investigation against italian IRS corruption and was again almost shot to death with a Kalasnikov by people he investigated. He was then transferred to Rome, left the police and was inserted in special investigation unit. During that time he managed to get infiltrated in criminal organisations in Italy and Colombian drug traffickers linked to Camorra clan allowing the seizure of 280 kilograms of cocaine and the arrest of over 43 people in Naples, Milan, Rome, Amsterdam and Venezuela. He drafted the first report on Economics, Crime and Finance in Italy.

I have met Angelo Jannone in Catania where he received one more honor award for peace work in the world. He travelled without bodyguards and police protection, recieveing the award in an open public place in Catania.

If a man like Angelo Jannone can travel and live in Italy with work positions in government and universities, do one really think a book writer like Roberto Saviano, that has not lead to any arrests or much disturbance at all, needs all this police protection? This is why I think Roberto Saviano is a media hoax. What he has created is just another fiction, but no true real work.

Angelo Jannone

Sicily tips for visitors

If you are traveling to Sicily please read this.

  1. I get many mails and requests of tips about Sicily; what to see, hotels to recommend, restaurants where to eat, what to eat, what to buy ecc. I rarely answer because it would be a full time job and I already have couples of activities to run every day. I recommend to go to the right side of this blog and click on Categories. There you find a collection of ten years of information about Sicily; places, towns, cities, beaches and much more. You also have a Search tool on the top where you can write key words and posts will come up.
  2. Abandoned cats and dogs. If you come here for a week or two and start to take care of street dogs and cats, do not expect to find a solution for the situation when you leave. In Sicily many animals lives on the streets, BUT many Sicilians are treating them well and leaves food. In many municipalities they have e.g. Cat Places where the municipality informs that they get fed daily. Here I have learned to always have foods e.g. in my car even if I do not have domestic animals and I leave foods outdoors every evening. Best way to help an animal, if you like, is to take it to the next veterinarian, fix a pass port and take the creature with you when you leave. The cat and dog was here before you came, and if it’s still alive it means they have foods somewhere in the area. Don’t expect to find a shelter or contact someone else to take over the “problem”. It is not always a problem, it is just a different system.

Welcome to Sicily!

Om du reser till Sicilien, l?s det h?r:

When a child is born

The Sicilian tradition when a child is born, is to mark the front door with a decoration that tells the whole city and village that the house has a new born baby. If the decoration is pink, then a girl is born. If the decoration is blue, a boy is born.

Film enthusiasts in Sicily – visit Oceans 12 movie scene

Many movies and movie scenes are made in Sicily. My favourite is the part from Oceans 12 where agent Lahiri meets her father for the first time, the master thief she has been chasing all her career, Mr LeMarque. This scene is filmed in Scopello, west Sicily, approximately 45 minute drive from Palermo.

Sicilien. Min favorit ?r denna scen fr?n Oceans 12 d?r agent Lahiri tr?ffar sin pappa f?r f?rsta g?ngen, m?stertjuven hon har jagat hela hennes karri?r, LeMarque. Den h?r scenen ?r filmad i Scopello, v?stra Sicilien, cirka 45 minuters bilresa fr?n Palermo.
