Crossing those waves with the Icon – Summer in Sicily

First real summer day in Taormina and it was time to lift the ancor of the yacht to take a bubble and gourmet tour around the stunning coast line of Giardini-Naxos, Taormina, Isola Bella and Letojanni. You have not seen Taormina properly if not seen from the sea side! Nuff talking, I let the photos speak…

Taormina Christmas – Dinner at Medousa

Christmas time in Taormina is wonderful. It is low season of tourists and the decorations this year are amazingly beautiful. Then we went for a nice dinner at Medousa by Porta Catania, a new restaurant opened August this year. Can highly recommend. They have a fairy-tale entrance with Christmas lights and decorations on citrus trees.

Sicilian sayings on the wall

Sicilian sayings are often in a more negative manner, but makes you laugh. Here one on the wall in Taormina saying Life is like a Christmas tree, always someone breaking the balls.

DrinkS & sNacks – Sicilian hospitality

Aperitivo is common in Sicily, you meet friends or customers for drinks any day of the week. Nice habit in Sicily is when you order drinks they always bring snacks. It can be chips and peanuts, or many times even a small tray with finger food like mini sandwich, meat balls, vegetables ecc. These are for free. If you want more food you can order drink with aperitivo or Happy Hour menu, and for some extra euros you get a larger tray with more different foods, enough for dinner. Enjoy!

Here we are at bar Daquiri at Corso Umberto in Taormina. You find it on the main street with funny colorful big flower vases on the steps.

Aperitivo ?r vanligt p? Sicilien, du tr?ffar v?nner eller kunder ?ver drinkar vilken dag som helst i veckan. Trevlig vana p? Njut!

H?r ?r vi p? bar Daquiri p? Corso Umberto i Taormina.

The garden made for Lady Florence Trevelyan

Do not miss the botanic garden in central Taormina, also called Villa Comunale. The garden was originally the home of Lady Florence Trevelyan, English noblewoman and cousin of Queen Victoria. She lived in Taormina since 1884 and married the mayor, Salvatore Cacciola. The park was created according to Lady Florence’s wishes as a typical English garden in which many rare plant species were planted. The rumour says she was not happy living in Taormina, so she got her own garden and things went better. She died in 1907.

Entrance is free, open from 9am to sunset. Take witha book, coffee and croissant. Here you get a relaxing moment from busy Taormina.

Hon dog 1907.

Entr?n ?r fri, ?ppen fr?n 9:00 till solnedg?ngen. Ta med en bok, kaffe och croissant. H?r f?r du en avkopplande stund fr?n v?lbes?kta Taormina.

When a child is born

The Sicilian tradition when a child is born, is to mark the front door with a decoration that tells the whole city and village that the house has a new born baby. If the decoration is pink, then a girl is born. If the decoration is blue, a boy is born.

Sicilian way to eat

The sicilian cuisine is quite simple to make because you feel the taste of each ingredient. You will notice that here in Sicily they do not use much spices. A great restaurant is one that is capable to combine the first and second course in the same pan, like this one where we ordered grilled prawns and with the apetizers leftovers they made a lovely tagliatelle called Diavola by adding fresh chilli and fresh pasta. With a light red wine this was a perfect dinner. Personally I like the Cucina Povera as they call it here, translated The Poor Kitchen, easy dishes made of what the soil and sea brings; contains much fish, beans and vegetables, wine and olive oil. It is also the famous Healthy Mediterranean Diet.
