Catania Intro (Lockdown mode)

Lockdown tour in lovely baroque Catania on the east coast of Sicily. Also called “the Milan of the south” due to its clubs, bars and restaurants. Dancer in the video is Sal Saccullo with student.

Walking from Corso Umberto – Via Etnea – down to Piazza Duomo. We are in lockdown mode 2.0 now, allowed only to be in the municipality which are quite small in Sicily compared to e.g. Sweden.

Kiruna – my home city that will be moved

It is one of the biggest operations in Swedish industrial history when the most northern city in Sweden will be moved because of the ore industry. The ore that comes from Kiruna is one of the strongest in the world and most of it gets exported to China. You see the mine on the left side with the big blue sign and on the right side the city center with the red old church, municipality and shops. The area inside the red tape is in the risk zone and will be moved first more below as you can see in the second picture.

Second photo: In the area where you see two blue signs on the right will be the new place for a new town municipality. The buildings body will be completely new, but the clock tower will remain and but on the new buildning. The church will also be moved as saved as it is. Contructions of new buildnings and neighborhoods has already started. New municipality will have a round form.

On the third photo you can see the size of the mine above and how large the ore body is under the earth. If you visit Kiruna do not miss the daily guided half day tour to the mine. It is an amazing experience.

The move of my lovely home town will take approximately 55 years. Everything to get the good iron under the city!

Infiorata in Noto – Flower and Baroque feast

Noto is one of the most beautiful baroque cities in Sicily. It is also well organized and nice for tourists to visit. Every year in the first part of month May is organized one of the most famous feasts in Sicily, Infiorata. Tens of thousands visit the flower filled streets of Noto. The feast also has a baroque caravan and to celebrate history they also have a wedding made in baroque style showing how things were done in history and to celebrate the city’s past. This is a very nice feast to visit.

Sicilien, Infiorata.

Coste di Santa Febronia and ancient city of Palagonia

Since som years I am part of a sicilian history and cultural group where we visit ancient places and experts in the area tells us all about the place and about sicilian history. Before the trip to Scandinavia we visited Coste di Santa Febronia located in the valley of Catania, between Palagonia and Militello. This is a place created by the hermits. On the top you find an ancient greek city with original cave carvings and paintings. Here you also find many edible plants and 5 million year old fossiles. The final leftovers are from year 1500 when the place got abandoned. You can see on the mountain walls different levels of the water.

We are approximately 400 m a.s.l. with a fantastic view.

Two point five years in Catania

To this date I have lived in Catania for 2,5 years and the reason of moving here was to try a larger city in Sicily. We are moving back to Ragusa next year. Saying that I do not like Catania makes many people very mad because peoples identity lays in the city they live in, especially Catanesi and Palermitani because these cities are in somekind of conflict, but this is not a city for me. It has been good to live here because I have seen another side of Sicily, my view of Sicily has worsened. But plans to move back to Ragusa has started and we are looking for some land. The major difference between Catania and Ragusa is that life quality is much higher in Ragusa and the public offices works much better. I called the Ragusa technical office and got information immediately, while in Catania I have problems to even pay my taxes. Every meeting with public offices here ends with a threat to report them to get atleast minimum service. It is not worth to waste life time for these battles. Catania has nice clubs, great food and more to offer if you like shopping, but in the other hand I feel like going backwards in time because it is a dirty city, quite mean, unneccessary chaotic and more ancient mentally. But is it just one hour from Ragusa if we like to come he and go clubbing one night. So Ragusa, I hope to see you soon! 🙂

I understand now why people told me on my first year Sicily tour Beata tu, vivi a Ragusa! = Lucky you, living in Ragusa!
