Wine tasting for 4

The wine association I am a member of organizes special wine tastings also with small groups and we went to visit a small winery by the Etna slopes who produces only 3,700 bottles a year. Here we walked in the wineyards, learnt about the vine process, special details of the soils effect and how the rains fall….and at the end we tasted the winerys red and white wine together with other products produced on the yard and local cheeses. A special day in a special place.

Ottobrata – Largest Sicilian food fiest

Every week in Sicily there is a food fiest going on. One of the largest is Ottobrata held in Zafferana Etnea the whole month of october. Every weekend a new product is celebrated; the first weekend the wine as the wine harvest is going on. The second the honey as this city is famous for its pure honey, and the last mushrooms as it is the mushroom season. These Sagre, as these feasts are called, has changed a lot these last years as we were there when the honey was supposed to be celebrated, but we did not find as much honey as previous years. These Sagre has grown to market places where most sicilian production and activities are presented and they are also a great excuse for sicilians to eat. And it shows of the number of food stands and on sicilians themselves.

Varje vecka p?g?r en matfest n?gonstans p? Sicilien. En av de st?rsta ?r Ottobrata som h?lls i Zafferana Etnea hela oktober m?nad. Varje helg firas en ny produkt; den f?rsta helgen vinet d? vinsk?rden p?g?r. Den andra honungen d? denna stad ?r k?nd f?r sin ren honung, och den sista svampen eftersom det ?r svamps?song. Dessa Sagre, som festerna kallas, har f?r?ndrats en hel del de senaste ?ren d? vi var d?r n?r honungen skulle firas, men vi hittade inte s? mycket honung som tidigare ?r. Dessa Sagre har vuxit till marknadsplatser d?r det mesta av siciliansk produktion och verksamhet presenteras, och de ?r ocks? en bra urs?kt f?r sicilianare att ?ta. Och det visar sig via hur m?nga matst?nd som finns och p? sicilianarna sj?lva.

Photo above: It is in the middle of chestnut season in Sicily. Chestnuts are also given to horses. Sicilians eat them smoked with some olive oil and red wine. Here you see how chestnuts are smoked. In Catania this time of year half of the city is filled with smoke from these containers.

On the photo above the man is making real sicilian Torrone. A typical sicilian sweet,?caramel texture with nuts. In these Sagre take the chance to buy typical sicilian foods as it is not easy to find them collected in a place like this outside the Sagre. And don’t be shy to ask to taste the products before you buy. It is normal in Sicily.
