Castellana Sicula – Murales paintings all over by Madonie mountains

Small village of 3000 inhabitants known for its Murales paintings. Since 1994 about 30 artists contributed with their art on this villages facades. In August takes place a folkloristic dance “Ballo della Cardella”. A fertility dance around a three meter high pole, which is identical to our viking tradition in Midsummer.

Skiing on Etna – with Eruption!

Skiing on Etna is something out of this world! And especially when the volcano in erupting the same time. This day was just perfect! New fresh snow that didn’t become icy yet and no wind at all. So warm I had to take my gloves off and was glad I just put jeans on. On one side you have the volcano, and on the other side a spectacular view to Taormina, Giardini-Naxos and with a clear day like this, all the way to Calabria.

Sadly you can not program to ski on Etna as the window of days is very narrow. We had just one day in one week of time to go because as soon as the Sicilian hot sun appears the snow melts rapidly and Etna is often very windy. You can do this if you are lucky to be in Sicily this time and match a day similar to this.

The north side has snow some days longer than the south side. There are two bars, some rental offices for ski equipment ecc. Three lifts with short slopes as Sicily is of course not a ski destination. We paid 30 euro each for the lifts, 20 euro each for rental of a whole set and 3 euro for parking. There is also a nice lunch restaurant by the slopes which you can reach skiing and then just take the ski lift up again. I recommend to go in the middle of the week as weekends are very crowded. — More photos after Swedish text —

Skid?kning p? Etna ?r n?got utanf?r denna v?rld!

Back in Sicily – first Stop at Teapot Cafe

Teapot Cafe at Via Liberta in Catania has become my favourite lunch stop when in the city. The place is very cosy and much needed in Catania. Sicilian cafes and restaurants are often quite dull cold places, but this one is a very varm welcome place with good food and service. The menu is short with salads, sandwiches and crepes. Always start lunch with an aperol Spritz while waiting for the order to arrive. If in Catania, stop by!

Teapot Cafe p?

Women who lunch

It is quite common that resturants and bars offers foods or an “after-meal” drink for free. Especially if you are a group of foreign women in tourist places they often offer small side dishes and then a drink to help digestion afterwards. It is very common in non touristical areas that this happens when women lunch or eat dinner, especially in Catania. This business lunch we just order a salad, risotto and glass of wine. The owner also brought in bruscetta while waiting for the ordered food, he also brought in small vegetable dishes combined with salmon and typical catanese desserts.

When you get these things for free do not worry, you do not pay for them. Do show respect for the offer to eat the most of the offered things. They do it for hospitality! Then look around at the other tables and you may notice that you were the only ones offered these extra dishes and drinks.

Where you should eat…

When you are travelling in Sicily, lunch places like below are best places to eat because it is where the local people eat. The food has much better quality, taste and you pay the right price. Best signs that you have found a good place is: 1) Ouh, should I really go in here? It is the first reaction because the local is often quite simple. 2) There are no other foreigners. Good! Then you avoid the classic sicilian misunderstanding Does not matter what we serve, tourists never come back. Actually sicilians are wrong, they do come back many many times.

This little place is in a small village just before San Vito lo Capo. Much better food quality and nicer approach.

Denna lilla plats ?r i en liten by strax innan San Vito lo Capo. Mycket b?ttre livsmedelskvalitet och trevligare s?tt.
