Etna sunset, moonset, smoking…

Last night Taormina Film Festival

Sunday was last night for 66th edition of Taormina Film Festival. Limited audience of 900 people instead of 5000 due to Covid 19 restrictions. Last night was about awards and some winners had to receive them live streamed due to travel bans. Stunning scenery as usual. It was a rainy weekend, but fortunately Sunday afternoon and evening it stopped raining and the event could be held outdoors. Sad about Taormina events is that there are no services. Seats were not dried and nothing to sit on, you have to bring everything yourself and beautiful gowns gets dirty due to mud and dirty rain water. You are not allowed to bring water with you inside and you can not buy any either. So three four hours with nothing to drink in the middle of the summer.

Paragliding over Taormina

Summertime with summer happenings, and this summer I finally did something I planned to do for a long time. Decided to do paragliding from 900 m.a.s.l, from the hills above Castelmola.
From there we flew over Castelmola roof tops, over Taormina and landed butt first on the beach in Letojanni. With spectacular views over the coastline and Etna. This is a must do if you dare!

By the start I was quite nervous because you have to run downhills and at one point the hill ends and you better be flying that moment. But then it was like flying in a cotton cloud. Silence, breeze, stunning views with an amazing feeling that is difficult to describe.

The photo above with the beautiful beach line of Letojanni. Where we are about to land.

If you want to do this, you find Etna Fly by the beach in Letojanni. You get an USB with a film of the whole flight and lots of photos. Enjoy!

The view from 900 m.a.s.l. (no filter)

The amazing view above Castelmola at 900 m.a.s.l. Next blog post will tell what we were about to do here.

Cin Cin sailing the coast

August and September is much about attending wine events in Sicily. The wine harvest starts soon in south Sicily and goes on until end September in some parts of the island. Here on a wine tasting sailing by the coast from Riposto to Taormina, incuding a buffet.

Opera Cavalleria Rusticana

Cavalleria Rusticana is an opera in one act by Pietro Mascagni. It premiered on 17 May 1890 in Rome but became world famous thank to the Godfather trilogy. I went to see it at Greek Theatre in Taormina. It has the perfect length of one hour and ten minutes.

The story takes place in a 19th-century Sicilian village and is in Sicilian language. It is a typical love story drama with betrayal, love and drama. You can read the whole story HERE.

Grekiska Teatern i Taormina.

Dance summer nights by the beach

On one side you have the long beach of Letojanni, on the other side you have one of the nicest beach night clubs in Taormina area. Caparena has dance nights every saturday July to italian Ferragosto in August. The club is also connected to national Italian radio RTL.

Crossing those waves with the Icon – Summer in Sicily

First real summer day in Taormina and it was time to lift the ancor of the yacht to take a bubble and gourmet tour around the stunning coast line of Giardini-Naxos, Taormina, Isola Bella and Letojanni. You have not seen Taormina properly if not seen from the sea side! Nuff talking, I let the photos speak…

The Castle of Calatabiano

The Castle of Calatabiano is a must visit if you are in Taormina area. It is just couple of minutes from Giardini-Naxos. You can also bike here the countryside roads. The castle has most remains from Arab-Norman era on top of a hill of 220 m.a.s.l. The castle has been in so many owners hand so no one can exactly say when it was built. What is known is that the castle got destroyed in the beginning or year 800 when Arabs conquered Sicily and was destroyed again during the worst earthquake in Sicily’s history, 1693. There are signs from the Greek era with the arch, a small temple and terracotta vases. The Romans has left bricks. What is interesting for us Scandinavians is that a Viking guard grave has also been found here and signs of Swedish domination.

The owner today is the Acireale’s church and thank to them this site was restored. Today you can visit the castle with a cable car. They have a nice bar, the present management organizes events like wine tasting and dinners. 23 st July 2009 the castle opened to the public. The view from here is spectacular.? — More photos after the Swedish text —

23 juli 2009 ?ppnades slottet f?r allm?nheten. Utsikten h?rifr?n ?r spektakul?r.

Taormina Christmas – Dinner at Medousa

Christmas time in Taormina is wonderful. It is low season of tourists and the decorations this year are amazingly beautiful. Then we went for a nice dinner at Medousa by Porta Catania, a new restaurant opened August this year. Can highly recommend. They have a fairy-tale entrance with Christmas lights and decorations on citrus trees.

Jultiden i Taormina ?r underbar.
