Lock Down Hungry

Locked in for two months and with a small hopeful message from the Government that we can go to restaurants and bars first of June makes me dream of my favorite restaurants. Hopefully they open then! Here Putia in Giardini-Naxos. When I lived the area this raw fish entrance was just over the top!

H?r Putia i Giardini-Naxos. N?r jag bodde i omr?det var denna r?a fisking?ng precis ?ver all f?rv?ntan!

Cin Cin sailing the coast

August and September is much about attending wine events in Sicily. The wine harvest starts soon in south Sicily and goes on until end September in some parts of the island. Here on a wine tasting sailing by the coast from Riposto to Taormina, incuding a buffet.

Wine event by Wine Not?

Through my new company Sicily Wine & Dine, that I am building up, I received a very nice invitation from Sabatina wine association to participate in their wine event Wine Not? It held place in north Sicily in a romantic small mountain village called Sant’Andrea with over 20 wine producers present. Here I found couple of interesting suppliers in the organic wine field. Also learned about a new wine variety called Faro which is a mix of five local wine grapes.

It was one of the best wine events I’ve been to, very well organized and they kept the food area in another location so one could concentrate on wine only. They even had ice boys walking around to make sure white and brut wines were constantly chilled.

Pit Stop Trapani

Trapani is a quite well known coast town on the west side of Sicily. Had a huge tourism boom when the airport was made a Ryanair airport, but now struggling to keep the numbers up. Trapani is not my favourite city, but the old town is really worth a visit. Beautiful baroque style with nice shops, wine bars and traffic free zones. Park the car in front of the harbor and walk the few minutes in. In Trapani you should eat the classical couscous with fish soup. The city is also well located between two important wine districts, Alcamo and Marsala. I would recommend to book a stay on the countryside of Trapani. We visited just couple of hours to eat after a wine tour.

We decided to stop by a wine bar and take in local Focaccia and Tagliere (cheese and chark).

Pennisi – Genuine mountain foods

Small cute special restaurants starts to pop up in the Sicilian inlands and do not miss Pennisi in Linguaglossa, just before the wine district of Etna. Their Parmiggiana is to die for and they have a waste wine collection. Second is a classical steak and third is lamb with mashed potatoes.

Don’t miss Cave Ox

If you are out by Etna north side and enjoying wine yards, do not miss Cave Ox. An amazing local restaurant in Solicchiata, just where the wine districts starts by Etna. The cook by the seasons and the owner is very friendly. He also offered me to taste some new wines he was thinking to have in the wine selection. Here having their anti-pasti and then Porcini mushroom pasta.

Wine Event – Calice sotto stelle in Castiglione –

I am visiting many wine and food events as I am open a second company in Sicily. Been busy times last months that I have not got the possibility to blog about whereabouts on this amazing island. In August we visited a very nice event called “Calice sotto le stelle” in Castiglione di Sicilia, meaning “glasses under the stars”. A wine tasting event where many small and big wineries are present. Here you can also enjoy old style made Sicilian street foods. Don’t forget to visit the castle on the top.

My work takes me all over Sicily and we were visiting one of my favourite towns, Castiglione di Sicilia. Castiglione is also the oldest wine town in Sicily and located by the wine and nut district. Here we were checking the allotment and how to organize the bus to come through for art groups coming to Sicily. Sadly for a cloudy day you can not see tha usual amazing view to Etna.

Sicilian way to eat

The sicilian cuisine is quite simple to make because you feel the taste of each ingredient. You will notice that here in Sicily they do not use much spices. A great restaurant is one that is capable to combine the first and second course in the same pan, like this one where we ordered grilled prawns and with the apetizers leftovers they made a lovely tagliatelle called Diavola by adding fresh chilli and fresh pasta. With a light red wine this was a perfect dinner. Personally I like the Cucina Povera as they call it here, translated The Poor Kitchen, easy dishes made of what the soil and sea brings; contains much fish, beans and vegetables, wine and olive oil. It is also the famous Healthy Mediterranean Diet.
