Wine tasting for 4

The wine association I am a member of organizes special wine tastings also with small groups and we went to visit a small winery by the Etna slopes who produces only 3,700 bottles a year. Here we walked in the wineyards, learnt about the vine process, special details of the soils effect and how the rains fall….and at the end we tasted the winerys red and white wine together with other products produced on the yard and local cheeses. A special day in a special place.

Visiting sicilian wine yards

When you come to Sicily it is a good idea to invest some of the vacation budget in a good wineyard visit. Sicilian wines are top quality and much of the process in wine making, from plants to production, is all made by hand. Best is to join a local company with vast experience in the sicilian territory and a good sommelier. Often you travel in small groups so you have time to ask questions and have time to really visit the site, learn techniques and learn to know the wineyard. This trip took us to three wineyards; Terrazze dell’Etna which is called so because much wine grows on terrazzes by the foot of Etna (as you can see in the first photos). They even try to keep the surroundings as natural as possible. Then we visited a classical wineyard called Cottanera. Last stop was by a very small wine maker called Fischetti who does only 10,000 bottles a year. There we also enjoyed a light lunch in typical sicilian style. I advice to take a good budget with you; not because the wines would be expensive, only because they are very good and differs from every winery.

This tour the sommelier learned something new though, that swedes often have a large glass collection at home for different kind of drinks. We often even have different sizes of wine glasses. While the other guests asked many questions about techniques and admired the big wine tanks, I was wondering silently in my head how it would be to dive into one of those. I love wine!

We were first convinced to become winemakers ourselves, but when you understand the work and precision behind every grape, type and soil we agreed it is better to remain to enjoy the products instead. One interesting detail was that the older a plant gets, more lighter the stem becomes.
