A Sneek peek into a Wineyard

Pictures from a organic wineyard.
My work.
Love it!

Landlords and bathrooms

My bathroom wall came down some time ago. I heard the noise watching a movie with a glass of wine in my hand, but I did not go there to see what happened. I did not want to face it. So after some weeks (we had to wait for the storms to calm down) my landlord started to renovate the bathroom. He asked which color I want. I said him to choose, I am too tired to make decisions. He chose the color of the sea as he remembered I once told him I like those colors.

There are three guys working, there are more smoking pauses than work sessions and they drink beer. One calls me Giovanni (in english John) and then two seconds later he corrects himself calling me Giovanna. He speaks only sicilian with Messina accent, one of the sicilian accents I do not understand. So I just answer him Si, Si! The other man he is talking all days about his swedish girlfriend he had when he was 19 years old. Even if he is married today with another woman and they have kids, he says that the time with the swedish girlfriend was the happiest time in his life and he regrets they broke up. I told him I have heard so many similar stories these years and I think he still has feelings for her. Yes, he admitted he has and thinks about her everyday, but he has only memories left as his wife burnet all letters and photos of her because of jealosy.

Estimated time when work is done should be tomorrow, but I think it will take one more week. I use my neighbors toilet and shower until it is done. They left the back door open. I live in Sicily.

Sicilien.

Word so loong…so looooooong

Italians, especially sicilians, are experts to create long words for passwords and for e-mail adresses. Like this wifi password in a restaurant in Santa Teresa Riva. It’s the same with many websites and email adresses. E.g. if Giovanni opens a organic green garden, don’t be surprised if he contacts you from an email adress that goes something like this: giardinoverdebiologicodigiovanni@gmail and sends you the welcoming to his website giardinoverdebiologicodigiovanno.com. I asked several times why not just shorten it to GVBG.com or something. But they say it is important that they see immediately what it is all about.

Street talk…

Today I heard a catanesi man complain to his friend that his wife has started to work and she does not “use her head anymore”.
I told him that “perhaps she has now seen how great it is to earn her own money instead of having you as a boss at home!”

No matter what I say, I am always wrong :)

A sad thing is that I meet much negative comments from sicilians and italians about living in Sicily. Living here is my own choise, I have nothing that has to keep me here. Not everything is bad nor good and this blog is about my experiences here, the good and bad ones. It is not nice to meet negative comments about my living choise everyday. When I say something good about Sicily (and Italy) I am wrong, and when I say something bad I am also wrong, so the content of this is that someone will always be pissed off no matter what I write or say. Sometimes I get the impression that negativity is pushed on me so they can hear something positive from a person who has positive things to say about Sicily.

One thing for sure is that I would not be able to live here from the economical point of view if sicilians would have not teached me so much about food, agriculture and export as they have done. For free. I would not be able to run my business idea here if I had not got that help. And trust is a second thing. Those hand shake agreements, that kept me away from sleep first months, has been kept and respected. So where can you find a helping hand like this?

Happy to help

A person I know was always complaining about his job and salaries does not arrive in time and the director sometimes brakes balls paying some of the staff and some not, just to be evil (This kind of company leaders are very common here). He is a honest and good worker, is never sick from work and work lots of extra days every month because his colleagues does not show up or call in sick often ecc. I avoid? talking about the italian system because the general opinion is that it does not work, but it actually does and the conditons are better than in Sweden for e.g. these cases.

Now it happened again that he did not get his paycheck, but all the rest did. He really needed his money. He was about to bring in an expensive lawyer. I told him not to do it and trust the system first and call his union. He said it is just a waste of time. But after several days of dialogue I showed him how to collect evidence against his company and how to speak to the union. Then he called the union, the same day union sent a letter to the company and next day he got his paycheck. The the union called him and said of there will be any more problems, call them immediately!

In Italy the system works, but many people wants to get things from the system that they have no right to get, e.g. people who create problems at work showing up late or call in sick often and gets fired, housewifes who then wants a pension and have not contributed anything to the society, students who do not go to school and later sue the school for not passing the year….and list is long. So many people here does not know anything about their rights nor obligations, and few shows interest to get information.

I guess it is about the same in every country.

Keep Calm and Love On

Today I woke up angry….and now I am calmer and can write something here:
– First anger is that renovation of the facade starts to hit 2 years now (!!). I north Europe it is a max 2 month job.
– Second is that neighbors hired company is renovating their apartment from 6 am everyday and they have done so for over two years now…the apartment is 60m2…
– Housewives screamed again this morning from 7am, and the biggest issue this time was that because of slow renovation they still can not put their kitchens outside and the rain has hit the outdoor walls. ???
We have to move!

Need to read this several times today….

Vi m?ste flytta!

On my way to meet buyers. It is nice to be well again and build up the company. Love this job!

BioTropic had a very nice stand this year, one of the best.

Crocetta asks to work on holidays

During holidays everything, but food places, are closed in Sicily. The sicilian president Crocetta is about to change this that museums and other places with activities are open also during holidays.

Under helgdagar ?r allt, f?rutom livsmedelshandlarna, st?ngda p? Sicilien.

Sicily and work situation

Sicily will receive 6 billion euros as a last chance to solve the unemployment and atleast 1,2 billion are already put aside to support existing companies. Most of the support is supposed to go to young, females and older workforce. Before christmas the Bellini theatre in Catania received 2 million euro to pay all delayed salaries for their over 300 employees.

F?re jul fick Bellini teatern i Catania? ? 2 miljoner att betala alla f?rsenade l?ner f?r sina ?ver 300 anst?llda.
